Scanning Services for Critical Applications: High-Res, High-Energy, High Capacity

Posted on September 8, 2025

When flight safety and mission readiness are on the line, you need data you can trust—fast. North Star Imaging’s (NSI) Scanning Services deliver production-grade Digital Radiography (DR), and 3D Computed Tomography (CT), and for low to high energy (9 MeV Linear Accelerator) critical applications such as aerospace and defense programs as well as for production support and university research. All supported by certified experts and proven turnaround.

Why teams with critical applications choose NSI for scanning services

  • On-demand expertise & quick turnaround. Hire by the hour (DR), per scan (CT), or by project to handle product backlog, urgent investigations, or specialized parts—up to 24/7 sorting when required.
  • Certifications that matter. ISO 9001:2015; ITAR registered; DOD 4145.26-M compliant; ASNT/NAS-410 Level III staff.
  • U.S. & U.K. lab coverage. Convenient access for development builds and field-return analyses.

1) High-Resolution CT for R&D Components

Early-stage design decisions hinge on what you can’t see from the surface. High-resolution CT reveals internal and external geometry, interfaces, and tiny flaws in complex parts like turbine blades, fuel injectors, valves, gearboxes, composites, and electronics—without sectioning.

What you get

  • Metrology-grade 3D: Internal/external measurements, part-to-CAD, wall-thickness maps, and porosity analysis for design verification and tolerance studies.
  • Rapid iteration: Close the loop between build, scan, and redesign far faster than destructive methods.
  • Actionable visuals: Slice anywhere in the volume and share interactive data sets with stakeholders.

NSI’s CT scanning and inspection services are built on the same efX software platform used in our systems, enabling consistent reconstruction quality and review from concept through production.

2) High-Energy CT (up to 9 MeV Linear Accelerator) for Additive Manufacturing & Dense Assemblies

Additive parts (Ni-based superalloys, Ti, Inconel) and large propulsion hardware often exceed the limits of conventional 225–450 kV X-ray. NSI’s Linac MeV-class scanning penetrates thick walls and dense materials to expose lack-of-fusion, porosity, inclusions, and trapped features—with fewer artifacts and better dimensional fidelity.

Where NSI’s high-energy linear accelerators shines

  • AM rockets & propulsion: Validate internal channels and build quality on 3D-printed nozzles, pumps, and chambers.
  • Large, complex A&D assemblies: Tanks, engine blocks, turbine modules, heavy castings—applications explicitly supported by NSI’s MeVX systems.
  • Better decisions, faster: Higher penetration reduces noise/scatter and beam-hardening artifacts so your defect calls and measurements are more defensible.

For AM process insight, CT also enables wall-thickness and surface-roughness evaluation workflows commonly used across the industry to correlate to fatigue performance in flight-critical parts.

3) Overflow DR/CT Imaging for Production Hardware

Production lines overflow; engineering teams get stretched. NSI acts as your capacity safety valve:

  • Overflow & backlog capacity for PPAP, first-article, or 100% screening—without capital spend.
  • Real-time DR for high-throughput decisions (voids, mis-builds, FOD), backed by CT deep dives when root cause is needed.

Typical Aerospace & Defense Use Cases

  • R&D & qualification: Cooling-channel validation; composite bond integrity; micro-porosity and shrinkage trend analysis; failure analysis; geometry verification.
  • AM production: System qualification and product compliance checks for flight hardware.
  • Energetics & ordnance: Nondestructive assessments that support safety and configuration control for munitions and subassemblies.

What to expect when you scan with NSI

  1. Consult with CT specialists to refine scope and acceptance criteria.
  2. Scan with DR/CT/MeV systems matched to material, size, and resolution needs.
  3. Deliverables include images, 3D volumes, measurement reports, and review sessions for rapid disposition.
