See Beyond the Surface

North Star Imaging filled 200 seats at the St. Michael Cinema, near our headquarters in Rogers, Minnesota on May 22nd-23rd for our 2018 Technical Symposium event. We welcomed customers across industries such as; aerospace, medical device, automotive, electronics, manufacturing, military and forensics and more. For 2 days, we listened to 19 presentations about different uses for 2D, 3D, and 4D X-ray Inspection. Basically, we had a lot of VERY smart people in one room.

Every day these technical experts look for ways to push the limits of technology and nature. Some dig into the past to discover answers for the future, some innovate and test to find the safest and strongest solution. But each person using nondestructive X-ray testing has one common goal; to see beyond the surface.

I know we all wish we had Superman’s X-ray vision power, maybe someday, but today we must rely on X-ray systems to do the work for us.

But it’s as much about the power and accuracy of the machine as it is about the knowledge and capability of the person doing the scan. That’s why coming together and learning from other NDT X-ray experts is so valuable.

One of the event speakers commented, “I was able to meet several other researchers that we might start collaborating with and I was able to reconnect with a few others that I haven't seen in a while.” Collaboration is key in every profession. If we don’t take the time to pause and learn from each other, we can’t identify areas for improvement. One of our attendees put it best when he said, “I love seeing how other people are using their CT scanners. Most of the speakers aren't directly related to the type of work I do, but they give me great ideas for new things I can do with my work.”

As I looked around the theater during presentations and saw people taking notes, nodding in agreement, and getting excited about what they heard, I knew all of the time and effort put into an event like this was more than worth it. Another attendee commented, “It's great to be around other people that have experience working with the equipment to learn from them and just have people around that experience the same problems and joys.”

"See beyond the surface" does not only apply to X-ray scanning. It applies to opening up your mind to new possibilities, looking past the way things have always been done and getting ready to take nondestructive X-ray testing to next level. I hope our attendees left the event with a renewed excitement and I look forward to welcoming everyone for our next technical symposium in 2020!
