In the fall of 2017, NSI opened an Inspection Services and systems demonstration lab located at 362 Elm Street, Marlborough, Massachusetts. Now that the system has been installed and the experts are in place, we hosted the first of many open house events on February, 13th. The event was put on in conjunction with Instron, our sister company, who specializes in materials testing machines. Attendees saw presentations from NSI on CT scanning of additive manufactured parts as well as live demos of digital X-ray and CT scanning technology. Instron demonstrated their new Bluehill® Universal Software and ElectroPuls™ dynamic test system.

The NSI demonstrations included live Digital Radiography (DR) scans of porosity in a casting and cell phone battery and electronics. After the DR demonstration, guests attended a reconstruction session with Zeke Millikan, an ISG Applications Engineer in the Massachusetts office. Zeke showed the group how the DR data can be reconstructed into a 3D Computed Tomography volume with the capability of slicing through the image to see every detail.

The customer base and attendees for NSI are quite broad with aerospace, defense, electronics and medical device representing a large portion of the turnout.

The office in Marlborough is set up with a X5000 system with the intention of providing contract inspection services to the East Coast market. The X5000 is the most versatile system offered by North Star Imaging, capable of scanning parts up to 32” by 48”. The system is equipped with a dual tube configuration including a 225 kV and a 450 kV source and dual DDA detector configuration. With lateral shift and vertical manipulation options, the system can perform subpiX, mosaiX and vorteX scans. With this investment in new technology as well as our experienced team, we can handle a variety of projects from single sample scanning to 100’s or 1000’s of parts.

The entire NSI team and I are thankful for the positive response as we have expanded in to this new East Coast office and look forward to the opportunity to serve our existing and new customers in years to come.
